A Royal Responsibility - Carpet Cleaning

Carpet cleaning:

When you enter a well-furnished house, chances are the flooring has a carpet. Carpets add class in a household. In the 18th century, interiors of European households (castles and manors) had carpets. Carpets are often associated to royalty, thus “the red carpet” during a big star-studded event in Hollywood, like the Oscars or the Golden Globes.

Interior carpets are used to maintain bare floors. Think of the carpet like that of clothes on your skin. But a carpet can be so difficult to clean. Imagine you have one in your household. Manual dusting means a person has to literally lift the thick carpet up and pound it with a brush, having some of the particles get in contact with the nose, resulting to sneezes and sniffling. This could also be hazardous to the health because carpet dusts are also germs that came from soles of shoes.

Here are tips on carpet cleaning:

1. The simplest carpet cleaning method is vacuuming. This should be done daily to lessen the accumulation of dust particles. This also helps prevent allergies from taking place. Some people are allergic to minute particles and they may not see it, but when the carpet is not cleaned, dust can clog up the sinus.

2. Make sure that the vacuum has a strong suction and tight filter. A vacuum with these features can remove half, or even more of the dried up soil particles on carpets.

3. Dust is not the only carpet enemy. Stain can also create a problem, especially if the carpet is expensive. Prevent spills and spots on the carpet surface. For example, when carpet is spilled with wine, the stain would be very difficult to remove. It could even be a semi-permanent stain if not cleaned earlier.

4. Brash reactions on removing stains from carpet lead the owners to use strong chemicals, thus smearing the stain deeper into and more fully on the carpet. When there’s a spill on your expensive carpet, don’t panic. Instead, grab cold water and a piece of cloth you could use for blotting. Then after dabbing it dry, that’s where you get the stronger chemicals. That is if the water didn’t help.

5. Be aware, however, that stain removal products for carpets have dangerous chemicals. Wear gloves and goggles when extensively cleaning. Use these products sparingly and make sure that thee is ventilation when applying these chemicals.

6. Browse through the product label and know its ingredients. If it contains hydrofluoric acid, nitrilotriacetic acid or tributyl tin, do not use these chemicals. These are health hazards.

7. If the cleaning product contains butane, isobutene or propane, use these with care.

8. A website you could use for researching on your carpet cleaning product is www.chemfinders.com or www.cleanlink.com. These sites provide safety information and the chemicals that are in a cleaning product.

9. If you are an environmentalist, these products are the environment’s enemies: dibutyl phthalate, nonyl phenol ethoxylate and octyl phenol ethoxylate. These are hazardous especially when discharged in the sewage system. Sewers can get clogged up and mess up the atmosphere. That is why it is illegal to throw any cleaning material onto the ground.

Having a carpet is appealing to the eyes. In fact, when your flooring is adorned with lush carpet, this is one of the first furnishing your guests will notice. Carpets mean responsibilities. When not cleaned, it would not only be aesthetically unappealing, it would also be a health risk for you and your loved one. Think of not cleaning your carpet as not bathing or wearing soiled clothes.

You wouldn’t want that, right?
